CHWHA
In April of 2023, we attended the Save Our Wild Horses Conference. We spent a lot of time while we were in DC lobbying members of congress to help protect our TRNP wild horses under public law. We need your help to thank those members that met with us. We also need to set up meetings with them and the other congressional staff members that we left information for. We are asking that you send a version of the following letter to the congressional staff contacts we made. We will add new contact names daily until we get all 200+ added. Please check back and send your emails. IF the contact is from your own home state, please customize the letter below and let them know that. They react differently to their own constituents.
Thank you for your support and for more details about this very specific Call to Action, please see our blog post from 5/5/2023: https://chwha.org/2023/05/05/new-call-to-action-5-5-2023/
Don’t forget to change the Congressman to Senator if that is who you are sending an email to. Also, please don’t forget to sign your name at the bottom!
Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have – info@chwha.org
THANK YOU for all of your help and support! Our sample email follows.
Hello! I wanted to take a moment to thank you for taking the time to meet with Christine Kman from Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates (CHWHA) last week when she visited your office to discuss the wild horses of Theodore Roosevelt National Park. I am one of the voices that Christine was representing in her meetings last week.
I hope you have had a chance to look over the information she left with you. As you are aware, Theodore Roosevelt National Park (TRNP) recently announced their plans to eliminate the entire herd of 190 horses from the park. They are currently in the process of formulating a Draft Environmental Assessment, which is expected to be completed this summer.
History has shown us that even if we are able to save the horses from the parks’ most recent attempt to eliminate them, nothing stops TRNP park management from coming back and making the same attempts again. Wild horses in our national parks are NOT protected under the Wild Horse & Burro Act. This is why we feel that they should be protected under federal public law, similar to the way the wild horses at Cape Lookout National Seashore are protected under Public Law 105-229.
We do not currently have a sponsor for this bill. Please let us know if the Congressman would be interested in sponsoring or co-sponsoring legislation to help protect our wild horses in TRNP. We would be happy to work with your office to draft this legislation.
We are also asking for a moratorium on funding for the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and their wild horse and burro program. We strongly oppose the use of our taxpayer dollars being spent to support the current program. We believe that the lack of transparency and accountability within the BLM in reference to their Wild Horse & Burro program warrants a confessional hearing.
I encourage your office to participate in the congressional screening of Wild Beauty in June. This documentary clearly shows the reasons why congress needs to be active in changing the way we manage our wild horse and burros.
I look forward to hearing about follow up meetings between your office and Christine Kman. The information that was left with you has been added to the CHWHA website. You can view the files here: https://chwha.org/media-info/.
Thank you again for your consideration. I look forward to hearing about the ways your office will work with us for better management of our wild horses.
Sincerely,

This next set of emails (much longer) are to the congressional staffers that we left information with, but did not get to meet with in person. Please note the email has changed slightly to reflect that:
Hello! I am writing to you today as a member of Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates. Our organization advocates for the wild horses in Theodore Roosevelt National Park in Medora, ND. Our organization’s president, Christine Kman stopped by your office while she was in Washington DC a few weeks ago and left a packet of information for your review. I am hoping that you have had a chance to look over the information.
