ACTION ALERT: Devil’s Garden Wild Horses

chwildhorseadvocates Avatar

Hello and Happy Saturday!

Thank you again to everyone for all of your hard work over the last two weeks for the mountains we moved for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park wild horses!

There were A LOT of people and organizations that pulled together and stepped in The Arena with us! We are very grateful to them for their support!

Within the hundreds of emails I received over the last couple of weeks, many advocates asked, “Can your group help other wild horse herds?”

I know we can try – can’t we?

Many of you seen the last Action Alert we had for the Devil’s Garden Wild Horses. My friend Mary was elated that while last year there were ONLY 2 people at the Motorized Vehicle Hearing last year. When I talked to Mary yesterday, she was over the moon that about 100 people were on the call this year! THANK YOU to everyone who was able to participate!

Can we help Mary and her heart herd again?

Mary has written a great synopsis of what is happening with the Devil’s Garden wild horses and why we all need to speak up for them. At the end of Mary’s Action Alert, there is a link for you to send an email to your own federal legislator and ask for their help to stop the Forest Service’s plans to eradicate this herd.

Thank you for being THE BEST group of wild horse advocates! Yes ~ THAT is my totally unbiased opinion!

Have a great weekend!

ASK CONGRESS TO INVESTIGATE USFS’S ERADICATION PLAN FOR DEVIL’S GARDEN WILD HORSES

Working in collusion with local ranchers, it’s no secret that the USFS has been intent on eliminating the Devil’s Garden wild horses from the Modoc National Forest (MNF). In the past six years, the agency has
removed over 3,000 wild horses to reach an unscientific Appropriate Management Level of 206-402.

Starting on October 28th, another roundup will target 500 more horses – an operation that could be the beginning of the end for what was once California’s largest and most significant herd.

Here’s why. The 2024 spring census estimated that there were 723 wild horses and no foals living on the 258,000-acre Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory (DGWHT). But last spring’s census estimated there were 1,339 horses including 46 foals, and last fall’s roundup removed 240 horses. So why the drastic drop in population?  What happened to over 375 horses and why no foals?  How can these censuses be trusted?

Then there’s GonaCon.

Currently, the USGS and Wildlife Services are conducting two GonaCon experiments on Devil’s Garden mares and stallions. And, in the revised Environment Assessment (EA) for the woefully outdated Territory Management Plan, along with more roundups to comply with an agreement with Modoc County livestock groups, the USFS is prioritizing GonaCon for fertility control. Given GonaCon’s growing reputation for causing sterility and the seriously flawed EA, how can the few horses left on the DGWHT survive?

The USFS is responsible for managing 53 Wild Horse and Burro Territories. Of those, 19 are “Inactive” – meaning that wild horses or burros no longer live on them.

Don’t let DGWHT become the 20th!

It’s time for the United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) to investigate the USFS’s mismanagement of the Devil’s Garden wild horses. Until then, this fall’s roundup and removal must be stopped, and the EA withdrawn.

Here’s how you can help:
* Send this email to your U.S. Representative and U.S. Senators, asking that this fall’s roundup and removal be stopped, and the EA withdrawn until a GAO investigation is completed. We made it easy with a one-click email form: https://secure.everyaction.com/TUGd9WmX4EqyNwsH08Wnww2
* If you’re a resident of California, follow up your letter with a phone call – or better yet visit their offices.

Thank you for your support and for taking action for this amazing herd of wild horses!
