Transparency

Hello again!

In case you missed it, Senator Hoeven made some pretty strong remarks yesterday in regards to Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the management of ALL of the wild horses – even speaking of Alluvium by name!

In light of his call for transparency from the park and his expectation that they work with the public, I sent the following email to Superintendent Richman. We will share any response we receive if/when we get one.

If you want to send your own email, you can customize your email here: https://secure.everyaction.com/4bIr7BLQ60SHxHhJLAI_-Q2

Thank you for your support!

Superintendent Richman ~

Hopefully you were able to tune into KX News last night.  They were able to cover Stallion Alluvium’s plight.  In case you missed it, you can watch it at this link: https://www.kxnet.com/news/local-news/wild-horse-alluvium-locked-up-in-north-dakota-by-park-workers/?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=socialflow&fbclid=IwZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAAR2CHmJ-T7xAR2ctNJH8pIYgUA7VO1FJR1_6JerA4OiL8D0u5v_39fYyZTA_aem_Vd3coQh-0tRt3Y5H0gQdYw

Joel Porter was also able to speak to Senator Hoeven directly about the future management of the wild horses that call the park home.  Senator Hoeven stated:

First and foremost, I’ve worked very hard to ensure we’re going to keep horses in the park. And I’ve continued to work on that, and we are going to keep horses in the park. And now the discussion has shifted to, you know, how many horses do you need for the right kind of genetic diversity and for the wellbeing of the herd? And what I’ve said is that it needs to be an open, transparent process with public involvement. So, the same would apply to any individual horse, whether it’s Alluvium or any other horse. Or any of these situations that come up. The park service must be open and transparent in terms of what they’re doing and engage the public so that North Dakotans know and have an opportunity to weigh in as to how that herd is managed. So that it’s managed in the best way possible. “

And today (7/17) and tomorrow (7/18) KDIX radio in Dickinson is featuring Grand Forks folk singer Tom Brosseau, who is sharing his own story and song about Alluvium: https://www.kdix.com/

The overwhelming comments on these social media posts as well as the THOUSANDS of emails that you and our elected officials have received all say the same thing: Alluvium is a wild horse acting naturally in his home.  The riders you said were bucked off their horse because of Alluvium said that was not the case.  They were also bucked off their horse because of a leaf or sage bush that blew by.  They are also asking that Alluvium be released.  The public is in agreement that when visitors enter our national parks, they should be doing so with the understanding that, as the park’s website states, All animals in the park are wild and unpredictable.” The public needs to respect all the wildlife in the park.  Wildlife should not be punished at the expense of the visitor experience.

Is there another way that the park would like the tax paying public to weigh in on the fate of Alluvium?  Please let me know and we will be happy to share that with our followers.

We are asking once again, that after 2 months in holding, that you release this stallion back into his home.  Please let us know when this will happen or how the public can weigh in on Alluvium’s fate.

In the spirit of transparency that Senator Hoeven stated the park would have with the public, I am once again asking for copies of any NPS reports that led to Alluvium’s capture.  I am also requesting a copy of the Categorical Exclusion that you signed with regard to Alluvium.

As always, I welcome the opportunity to have an in-person meeting with you so that we can discuss how we can work together to allow a genetically viable and healthy herd of wild horses to remain wild and free in the park – INCLUDING Stallion Alluvium.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Christine Kman

Thank you for your tenacity in fighting for the horses. I have sent emails and donated to help their cause thanks to your updates and I pray the continued actions will result in them being kept wild.
