R.I.P. Stallion Sidekick

It is with a very heavy heart that we have confirmed that it was Stallion Sidekick that Theodore Roosevelt National Park reported died yesterday.

Sidekick turned 20 this year and was an amazing blue roan stallion.  He was a favorite of many and we are blessed to have so many fond memories of him.

Sidekick joins the other legendary stallions that we have lost in this herd over the last few years.

Sidekick does have offspring still in the park, so his legacy will live on.

We are not sure where his band is at this time, but we will update you when we find out.

We forget that these horses are not immortal.  Sidekick lived his entire 20 years of life wild and free and for that we are grateful.  He was a bad ass for sure and because of that, we tend to think he is untouchable.  We never know when our time on this planet is over.

This is also why it is so important that there is a proper management plan for these horses.  Stallions like Circus and Wind Canyon died without any offspring in the park to carry on their genetics.

There are over 40 horses in this herd of just under 200 that are aged 15+ and almost half the herd is over the age of 10.

We have a lot more hard days coming.

Rest in Peace Sidekick.  Thanks for sharing a small part of your amazing life with us.  To say you will be missed is an understatement.

We are very thankful to Theodore Roosevelt National Park for announcing that one of the horses had passed away on their Facebook page yesterday.  We hope that this is truly the start of a new transparent relationship between the park and the public.
