With your help and support, Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates has achieved many great things in our fight for the proper management of the wild horses that call Theodore Roosevelt National Park home. 

The biggest celebration we had was on April 25, 2024, when the park announced that they would be abandoning their current Environmental Assessment process that called for the elimination of the ENTIRE herd of wild horses!

We told you then to take a moment to celebrate but we warned that without much needed federal protection, the park would be back with a new way to try to eradicate this historic herd of wild horses.

Within 6 months, they did just that!  In October, they carried out a plan to use a helicopter to roundup as many of the 197 wild horses that they could.  Once the horses were captured, the park planned to remove up to 15 non-responders to GonaCon AND they planned to hand inject EVERY female horse with GonaCon.

While we were not able to stop the roundup completely, CHWHA DID STOP THEM FROM REMOVING ANY HORSES!  We also stopped them from hand injecting EVERY female horse with GonaCon.  According to park records shared with the public, only about 1/3 of the mares received a hand injection.

TRNP Park management told us in a meeting a few weeks ago that they plan to continue to use GonaCon as aggressively as ever as they are trying to “halt reproduction in this herd”!

We have our work cut out for us in 2025!

We also continue to work with Senator Hoeven’s office to get the federal protection for this herd that they need to always remain wild and free in Theodore Roosevelt National Park.
