“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Be hopeful, be optimistic. Our struggle is not the struggle of a day, a week, a month, or a year, it is the struggle of a lifetime. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble.”
~ John Lewis
Hello and Happy Wednesday to everyone!
We get a lot of emails and calls asking if we are aware of different roundups happening on our western lands of our wild horses. I am also asked often if we can help other individuals and organizations.
The truth is the ongoing work to get federal protection for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park wild horses has become more than a full-time job for me personally. That being said, we are always open to helping other herds in whatever ways we can. I also personally spend a good amount of time talking to other advocates and brainstorming how they may be able to make a difference.
This was the topic of my presentation at our first virtual summit this year. You can watch that video, and all the videos from speakers at the summit on our YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/@ChasingHorsesWildHorseAd-vj8hm
The biggest thing we ALL need to do right now is continue to be vocal. The call to be vocal is more than just complaining on social media or with other advocates. Use your voice to bring the issues to the people we elected to create change!
No matter what side of the argument you are on these days, respect has to be given to Senator Cory Booker for standing up and speaking out about massive changes happening in our world today. Senator Booker mentioned numerous times and read letters from his constituents. Those constituents who took the time to call, and write to his office caused him to know he had to do SOMETHING to let his people know their voices were being heard.
As John Lewis said in the quote above – “NEVER, EVER BE AFRAID TO MAKE SOME NOISE” – I will ask what noise have you made today for our wild horses and burros on our public lands?
How can you help? What can you do?
CONTACT YOUR STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATORS!! This is the #1 thing you can do! Let them know you want our wild horses and burros to remain our public lands! This is also “appropriations season” – the time that EVERY member of Congress is getting their funding/budget requests in. Have you let your members of Congress know where you want your tax dollars spend and what you DO NOT want your tax dollars supporting?
Our friends at Oregon Wild Horse Organization and Western Watersheds Project are fighting hard to save the Kiger herd of wild horses. Please see their social media pages and websites for ways you can help. https://www.oregon-wildhorse.org/ and https://www.westernwatersheds.org/
The comment period has opened for Wyoming’s Checkerboard herds: Salt Wells Creek, Divide Basin and Adobe Town. Wild Horse Education has some helpful tips on how to comment on their website: https://wildhorseeducation.org/2025/04/01/rock-springs-comment-periods-trail/
Our friend Jen at Wild Narrative Project posted some information about the Montgomery Pass wild horses. We also had the pleasure of speaking with some advocates about this herd this week. You can learn more on Jen’s website: https://wildnarrativeproject.org/
Linda Greaves and her group just finished their Lobby Days in Washington DC. THANK YOU to everyone who participated! If you didn’t participate, you still can! It is as easy as CONTACTING YOUR STATE AND FEDERAL LEGISLATORS! Linda will also be hosting a conference again this year. You can learn more on her website: https://www.saveourwildhorsesandwildlife.org/
There are countless other advocates like us speaking up for their own herds. Please do what you can to support all of us!
We did host a Horse Talk last week to discuss GonaCon and the TRNP herd. In case you missed it, the video has been uploaded to our YouTube channel. You can watch it here: https://youtu.be/860tQMeN1ao?si=A9Asi3_5XbNIXUyo
We were going to give a NEW Call to Action this week, but instead, we are in communication with the National Park Service. It is their turn for a response. We will update you when we can. SPOILER ALERT: They have been INUNDATED with emails! Keep them coming!! – YOU HAVE THEIR ATTENTION! Emails for stopping the use of GonaCon can be sent here: https://secure.everyaction.com/7exTfk62vU6c0On_NDNIfA2 Emails to have the collars removed can be sent here: https://secure.everyaction.com/mFnS9JcvoEypRJBKdpxK_w2
Thank you for your continued support and be sure to get in some “good trouble” today!
