Hello and Happy Friday!
I am sure all of you remember that during the wild horse helicopter roundup in Theodore Roosevelt National Park last October, 15 mares were fitted with GPS tracking collars. The park claims it needs to collect this data to properly manage the horses.
We have all heard about the negative impacts of these collars on wild horses. These impacts include both health and safety issues.
We are not here to debate any of those issues. Simply stated, these collars are NOT necessary. This is one of the most documented herds of wild horses in the nation. There are more than enough volunteers that are willing to work with the park to help them monitor the movement of the horses throughout the park. There are also less invasive ways to track the movement of the wild horses.
We have had a petition open since the collars were placed on these horses. Many of you have already signed it. THANK YOU for your dedication to this herd. We have been sending copies of this petition to different members of our state and local government since October.
When we work with the state and federal government, the wheels move very slowly. Just because we have not talked about this lately, DOES NOT mean that we are not consistently working on getting these collars removed from our wild horses.
We are preparing for a very important meeting with an official we have not yet had an audience with. We have about a week to prepare for this meeting where these collars, among other things, will be discussed. We believe this office has the authority to have these collars removed.
We are asking that you please take a moment to sign this petition, if you have not already, asking that these collars be removed. Once you know we have your signature, we are asking that you ask your friends and family members to also sign.
We need as many signatures as possible by May 15th. The petition will be sent ahead of our meeting to the receiving office on Friday 5/16.
We will of course share details about this meeting when we can.
Please take a moment to help us get as many signatures as possible by THURSDAY May 15th : https://secure.everyaction.com/x-5WrjPo20Cb4LGbj5PD-A2
We also wanted to take a moment to say THANK YOU to everyone who took a moment to make a donation, no matter how big or small, yesterday. We have a lot of work still ahead of us and your support is what helps keep us moving forward.
