Hello and Happy Thursday to everyone! We are going to momentarily veer from our new blog series to discuss something EXTREMELY important with regards to our wild horse and burros!
You will remember that in January of this year we held a virtual summit with the goal to empower everyone to speak up for our wild horses and burros. We KNEW they would need our voices, possibly more than ever, and we wanted everyone to be as educated as possible. We also wanted you to begin to establish relationships with your own members of Congress.
We spoke in the past about the appropriations process and how this can be used to change laws in a more immediate way than, say, things like The Theodore Roosevelt National Park Wild Horse Protection Act – that law will likely take at least a year to reach the finish line.
The current Interior Department Appropriations bill has taken a line OUT of their proposed budget that would read something like:
” Funds from this (2026) appropriation are precluded from use to destroy healthy animals which have previously removed from public lands by any government agency. “
This removes long-standing protections against lethal management and commercial slaughter and pave the way for the killing of up to 64,000 wild horses and burros currently in government holding!
THIS is right out of the Project 2025 playbook. We discussed this with the Wall Street Journal in an article that was published a few weeks ago. You can read that article here: https://www.wsj.com/politics/inside-the-save-americas-wild-horses-campaign-50cc0390?fbclid=IwY2xjawKuNAZleHRuA2FlbQIxMQBicmlkETEySlRQWjk4ZlJTcnRjVW1SAR4l0_4MHazUtfAsIE03nvRFf5zREQVpIJ90cmXdvNy8JdPP7BF4sSiC7-dylg_aem_bhVfLtDLs7n10-vaGaLhXA
We hope that you have established a relationship with your members of Congress. They need to hear from you NOW!
We have created a one-click Call to Action on this and we are also working with other wild horses and burro organizations to get a firm and extremely necessary grass roots movement in place with the hopes of changing this detrimental fate for our wild horses and burros!

You SHOULD also call your members of Congress and use the following talking points:
Tell Congress: Keep the Slaughter Ban Intact
The Trump Administration’s proposed FY26 budget would slash the Bureau of Land Management’s Wild Horse and Burro Program by more than 25% and remove long-standing protections against lethal management and commerical slaughter and pave the way for the killing of up to 64,000 wild horses and burros currently in government holding.
This marks a reversal from the first Trump Administration, which took lethal management off the table, citing the president’s lack of support.
This isn’t “management.” It’s a massacre waiting to happen. Congress must act now to perserve the prohibition on wild horse slaughter.
Slaughter is not a solution. It’s a betrayal of our nation’s values and a violation of public trust. 80% of Americans oppose horse slaughter.
There’s a better way:
- Stop roundups and scale up fertility control.
- Rewild and repatriate horses to their native ranges.
- Phase out holding and invest in humane, cost-effective alternatives.
Congress is debating the budget this month. Act now to stop the slaughter before it starts.
ACT NOW: Tell your lawmakers to reject the FY26 budget’s slaughter proposal and fund humane, on-range wild horse conservation.
We will have more ways you can help on this but TODAY and EVERY SINGLE DAY we ALL need to be calling and emailing our members of Congress. Their jobs are to take our voices to Washington DC and create change. This is NOT a time for silence. This is NOT a time to think that someone else will make the call, or send the email. This will literally take ALL of us to get this changed! Please take a moment to take action! https://secure.everyaction.com/KF2yXgCwwkaCX1VclY5OAA2
Again, we will have more coming soon on how you can help raise awareness on this important issue!
