As promised, we have more to share from Washington, DC. 

We have listed below all the offices we contacted while we were in Washington DC a few weeks ago.  We have also listed all the contacts by state.  We made it to the offices of 43 different states!

Each office was left with a packet of information that was put together by Heather from Save Our Wild Horses.  You can download the packet here:

What we need everyone to do now:

We told you we were taking your voice with us to Washington, DC – and we did! The follow-up for all these contacts will take each and every one of you to maximize this opportunity!

1. Everyone is welcome to contact North Dakota Senator John Hoeven’s office.  We spoke with his office in detail about the Theodore Roosevelt National Park wild horses and possible next steps that we can work with his office on.  He was also given the first draft of our ND State Legislation.  We also left his office with the packet that everyone else received.  The message to Senator Hoeven’s office should say something like (feel free to customize):

Senator Hoeven:
Thank you for taking the time to meet with members of Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates (CHWHA) recently.  I also wanted to say thank you for your continued support for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park wild horses.  I appreciate your commitment to ensuring that a healthy and viable herd of horses remain in TRNP.  I hope that we can count on your office to support the ND state legislation that will be introduced in the 2025 session.  As a member of CHWHA, our organization hopes that we can count on you to support the wild horses in Wyoming also staying in the only home they have ever known.  Our organization also hopes that you will use your position on the Appropriations Committee to remove language in the BLM budget that funds the office to permanently sterilize our wild horses.

• #2. If your state is one of the 43 listed, please take a moment to send an email to your representatives.  A sample email to send is below.  As always, feel free to customize this:

Two weeks ago, representatives from Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates/Save Our Wild Horses left information with your office to pass on to you regarding some of our concerns about wild horses on the western range.  Please let me know if you have not received this information, I will be happy to send it to you as an email attachment.  I would like to set up a phone meeting with you to discuss this information further.

We took a message to Washington DC for all of you.  Now we need you, as the constituents of these members of Congress, to follow up.  Members of Congress respond first and foremost to their own constituents.  This is where we need all of you to help maximize the impact of our trip!

Are you nervous?  Believe me, I know how you feel! Here are some points that will hopefully help settle your nerves:

1. These are OUR elected officials!  They are in place to be our voice in Washington DC.  We hire them through our election process. They do NOT know what our concerns are unless we tell them.
2. You will be meeting with a staff member for your Congressman/Senator.  Sometimes it is a little less intimidating knowing this. 
3. I cannot tell you how many times Senator Hoeven’s office has said thank you to us for keeping this issue in front of them.  Our elected officials want to hear from us!
4. Plan on this conversation being 5-15 minutes.  I think we can all do ANYTHING for 5 minutes, can’t we?

When you attend your meeting, what do you say?

1. Be calm and respectful.  We all get emotional when we talk about what is happening to our wild horses and burros.  Act as if you know this is the first time your representative is hearing about these issues, like you are giving them a Wild Horse 101 class.  Give them the chance to offer any help or advice they may have or maybe even to let you know how they have helped wild horses and burros in the past. Be sure to thank them for their time!
2. Familiarize yourself with the information in the packet.  Feel free to reach out to myself or Heather if you have any questions. 
3. We would like your member of Congress to support keeping the Salt Wells Creek, White Mountain and Divide Basin wild horses in the only home they have ever known ON the public lands that were set aside for them through the Wild and Free Roaming Wild Horse & Burro Act.
4. We would like your member of Congress to request that the funding that the BLM continues to receive for the permanent sterilization of our wild horses, with our tax dollars, be removed from the BLM budget. 
5. Feel free to ask the person you meet with for any ideas they may have on how we can be successful in our requests. 

The goal of this meeting is to educate your representatives and also establish a relationship between you and your elected officials.  Please share any information you receive with us!  We would also love for you to comment on our social media pages that you have taken these actions and where you are from.  Hopefully this will help encourage others to take action as well!

We would ask that EVERYONE contact the representatives from Wyoming and ask for their help to keep the Salt Wells Creek, White Mountain and Divide Basin wild horses on the public lands that were set aside for them by the Wild and Free Roaming Wild Horses & Burro Act.   If you are not from Wyoming, please let them know what state you are from, and if these herds are zeroed out, as the BLM is planning, that you will NOT visit the state of Wyoming again. 

A few “IF’s”…

IF

1. Your state is NOT listed.  Please look up your members of Congress and call their DC office and ask for the contact information for the person who handles their animal rights or wild horse issues (if you are a western state).  Once you have made initial contact with them, even speaking on the phone asking for their email address, ask for permission to email the packet to them.  Many members of Congress will not blindly open email attachments. 
2. You see the word (budget) after a name, that means that the member of Congress is on the Appropriations Committee.  EVERYONE can email these people and request that they stop funding the BLM with our tax dollars to permanently sterilize our wild horses and burros. 
3. Your own representative is not on the list. Continue to contact the ones from your state that are on our list.  If you are not in their district, chances are they will connect you to the person in your district that you should contact.  If nothing else, hopefully you help educate one more person.

We know that there are other issues that need to be discussed regarding our wild horses and burros.  We are asking that you keep this initial conversation to the points we made in our packet.  We will address the other issues in follow-up conversations. 

Remember: This is a short week!  It can take 1-2 weeks for you to get your meeting scheduled.
