Hello and Happy Wednesday to everyone!
We wanted to give a quick update. We have a meeting set up with the new interim superintendent next week.
One of the things we continue to work on is getting these collars of the 15 horses that the park placed on them during the October 2024 round-up.
Superintendent Daniels stated that she does not have the authority to have the collars taken off. She did add: “The expectant timeline for wear/use is 2.5 – 3 years, depending on the life cycle of the collar (battery life).“
The park plans on keeping these collars on the horses for THREE YEARS!!
We did speak with NPS Deputy Director Lands about this when we visited with him in Washington DC a few weeks ago. We have also sent a follow up email to his office about this issue.
We know these collars are unnecessary because the park already created their own report about the land the wild horses use in their report that was released in March of 2024. In case you missed this report, you can view it here:
We have a petition asking that these collars be removed. We delivered copies of this petition to both Senator Hoeven’s office as well as NPS Deputy Director Lands during our in-person meetings a few weeks ago. If you have not already signed this petition, please take a moment to sign it. If you have already signed it, please pull this up tomorrow when you gather with your family and friends and ask them to sign it! The petition can be signed here: https://secure.everyaction.com/x-5WrjPo20Cb4LGbj5PD-A2
While we were in Washington DC, we spoke with several congressional staffers. We asked them specifically about petitions – do they work? Do they make your office take notice? Etc. Every office told us they DO look at petitions. They said it didn’t matter how many signatures – one signature from a constituent was enough to let them know there is an issue they need to address.
We will bring an updated copy of the petition to our meeting with Superintendent Daniels next week. We will also email updated signatures to Senator Hoeven and Deputy Director Lands.
Thank you for your continued support!
