Hello again!
It’s been a very busy day!
In case you missed our blog earlier today, The Theodore Roosevelt National Park Wild Horse Protection Act is moving right along through the federal legislation process! THANK YOU to the 700 of you who took the time to take our one click Call to Action TODAY!!!
CHWHA is asking for amendments to this legislation. We have discussed these amendments in detail in a blog series in October. You can find those on the homepage of our website at http://www.chwha.org We have also discussed these amendments with Senator Hoeven’s office and other members of the committee that will meet on Tuesday.
One small example of the amendments we are requesting is the line that says that the park has to maintain not less than 150 horses.
The problem with that small line is that it doesn’t specify WHICH horses – as this reads, as long as there are 150 horses in the park, then TRNP is compliant. At this moment there are about 200 horses in the park. If this legislation passes without our requested amendments, let me ask you – which 50 horses do you think the park should remove?
We hope you agree with us that NONE of the current horses in the park should be removed. There are still about 50 older horses that we will lose in the next few years. The herd will organically reduce their numbers. This is why we are asking for there to be not fewer than 150-200 horses. It eliminates the set number and protects ALL of the current horses in the park. The way this is written, it can also be interpreted as the park being in violation of this if there are more than 150 horses.
We are trying to bring clarity and close any possible loopholes we have identified NOW.
If the committee does NOT vote to move this legislation forward on TUESDAY, THAT’S IT! The legislation is DEAD!
It is CRITICAL that this committee hears from us LOUDLY AND CLEARLY!!!
Please take a moment to take our one click Call to Action that will email the Senators on the Energy & Natural Resources Subcommittee on National Parks and let them know we want S1377 passed WITH AMENDMENTS! You can take this action here: https://secure.everyaction.com/T36FlnIDpka4ZwpjPdfCIg2
At this time, these are the ONLY Senators you need to contact! If they don’t pass this, no other Senators will even know that S1377 exists!
As a reminder – ANYONE – ANYWHERE – can take this action. You DO NOT have to live in North Dakota, you don’t even have to live in the US! You CAN also send these emails as many times as you like! As a friend of mine said, “Please like to A LOT!”
We have spent the day spreading the word!
We are grateful to WDAY & The Fargo Forum for reporting on this issue! You can view the report here: https://www.inforum.com/news/north-dakota/wild-horses-of-theodore-roosevelt-national-park-could-gain-federal-protection-under-new-bill
We also will have a full-page Op-Ed in one of our state papers this weekend urging people to take action! This will also include online digital ads!
As if divinely timed, Cowboy Christmas is happening in Medora this weekend! We have printed a ton of flyers urging people to take action! To make sure they don’t go home and forget, we even created a QR Code for easy action taking!
I personally have worked over 12 hours today and my day isn’t over yet!
At this time, the Senators on this committee have received over 700 emails. THANK YOU to everyone who has taken this action. The thing is, there are TENS OF THOUSANDS of people who love and follow these horses. WE NEED ALL OF YOU NOW MORE THAN EVER!
As I expect my next 4 days to stay busy, my only ask from each one of you is to take a moment to take this one click Call to Action. If you already did, please do it again. Do it every day. Ask a friend, family member and/or co-workers to take action too! You CAN send emails and call these Senator’s offices on the weekends!
WE CAN DO THIS, but it will take EVERY SINGLE ONE of us!
About half of what we raised for Giving Tuesday has been spent today to raise awareness for this part of our campaign to get federal protection for these horses. Once again, we will say that our Giving Tuesday Campaign is open until this FRIDAY (12/5/2025) Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to help us get this federal legislation across the finish line! We are ONLY at the beginning! You can make your Giving Tuesday donation here: https://secure.everyaction.com/7asDu6CfkkaLbjUYufMPcQ2
Thank you again for your support and have a great day!
