We attended a NEW Coffee with the Legislators today. Sadly, this one was not recorded, so it will not be televised.
I had the opportunity to speak with some of our North Dakota state senators this morning. Here are some takeaways from those conversations:
- Our North Dakota legislators have just under 1,000 pieces of legislation they are discussing this year. Of those 1,000 pieces, ONLY about 300-400 will pass! SCR 4014 (asking the park to keep the horses and longhorn cattle) IS expected to pass easily.
- There is NO need for people to be calling their ND legislators. When I asked if we should ask people to call, the answer was a clear “NO, NO, NO, NO, NO”
- The public is strongly encouraged to submit their comments online. Comments can be submitted online at: Public Testimony Registration and Submission | North Dakota Legislative Branch (ndlegis.gov) A strong public response on the website will send a powerful message.
What should you comment? It can be as simple as Please pass SCR 4014. This is very different from Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s comment period that just ended. Your comment does not need to be scientific or historically factual. IF you have that information, by all means, please do share it, just know it is not necessary. You can also share the same comment you sent to the park.
Your comment letter has to be in .pdf or .txt format. Creating a .pdf file is easy! Here is a website that can help if you are unsure how to do it: https://www.howtogeek.com/666835/how-to-print-to-pdf-on-windows-10/
Several of you have asked about the wording of the resolution as it was drafted. Today, I submitted a formal request for changes to the wording of the resolution. I will let you know if they are accepted.
This resolution will be heard by the ND Energy & Natural Resources Committee this Thursday, February 9, 2023 at 9 am CST in the Peace Garden room at the Capitol building. You are welcome to come and testify or just come and support this part of SCR 4014’s process. The current action is for the committee to hear testimony. Soon after the senate will vote on this resolution and then it will move to the ND House. We will keep you posted on the progression of SCR 4014.
Please continue to ask any questions you may have about this process. It is new for most of us!
Thank you for your support!
Chasing Horses Wild Horse Advocates is committed to advocating for a wild horse management plan and protection for these unique wild horses that call Theodore Roosevelt National Park home! We are fighting for a management plan that is guided by science especially when it comes to decisions regarding the removal of horses and the administration of birth control. Many other wild horse management plans have proven to be successful with their science-based plans. We are asking for the same for this amazing group of wild horses that call Theodore Roosevelt National Park home.
Thank you for supporting the wild horse population in the U.S. We appreciate all your hard work and keeping us informed.
